Teeth Grinding,TMJ and Neck Pain -
How Bowen Therapy Helps Ipswich residents get out of pain.
If you and wake up with jaw pain, neck pain or shoulder tension, you’re not alone. Many people experience these symptoms without realising they may be caused by teeth grinding (bruxism). Over time, clenching or grinding the teeth can overload the jaw muscles and lead to TMJ dysfunction, creating a ripple effect of pain through the neck and shoulders.
Why do we grind our teeth? Well, thats the big question….
Most of the time grinding or clenching your teeth in your sleep stems from stress or worry. Other causes can be: intestinal discomfort, including parasites, nutritional deficiencies, sleep disorders or excess caffeine or alcohol.
The tricky part is - most people don’t even know they are doing it! They go to bed and wake up in agony with neck pain and no idea why.
Why teeth grinding affects the neck and shoulders
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw to the skull, just in front of your ears. When it’s under constant tension from grinding or clenching, you may notice:
Jaw pain or tenderness when eating or talking
Clicking or locking of the jaw joint
Neck pain and stiffness
Shoulder tightness or upper back tension
Headaches or earaches
Pain in the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM)
Because the jaw, neck and shoulder muscles support posture and movement together, pain in one area can spread to the others. That’s why someone who grinds their teeth at night may also feel ongoing neck and shoulder pain during the day.
